Girls Justice Day

Every day in the United States, girls are forced to defend themselves from violence including sexual assault, abuse, neglect, and trafficking. But did you know that the most common responses to that abuse — including running away, substance abuse, and truancy — are also the most common crimes for which girls are arrested? Far too often, girls who have endured such trauma end up in the juvenile justice system instead of receiving the support and care they need and deserve. According to this report, 31 percent of girls in juvenile justice have been sexually abused, and 45 percent have endured multiple traumatic childhood experiences. And while Black girls make up 14 percent of the general population, they are 33.2 percent of girls detained and committed.

For juvenile justice reform to be truly effective, every decision must consider the context of girls' lives, address their distinct needs, and actively work to eliminate the disproportionate detention of girls of color.

October 26th is Girls’ Justice Day – a day to raise awareness about girls’ unique experiences with the juvenile and criminal legal systems. At Girls Inc., we recognize the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by girls, including those entangled in the juvenile justice system. This Girls Justice Day, let's renew our commitment to the girls in our communities and nationwide
