Annie Broderick’s art showcase in support of Girls Inc. DC

Annie Broderick held a one night only live art showcase at Long View Gallery on July 27th in support of Girls Inc. DC. The event featured Annie’s wearable art, handsewn using Kevlar layered with other materials. Bulletproof when layered, Kevlar is the fabric used in modern-day body armor. Kevlar is Annie's favorite material metaphor for feminine inner power: it is both delicate – a needle easily pierces through it for sewing – and strong (5x stronger than steel!), protecting the wearer against a bullet. Each wearable piece was hand-sewn to express each woman’s power as the collection highlighted and celebrated 12 chosen women whose personal stories inspired Annie.

In addition, Annies’ work also celebrated the collaboration with girls from Girls Inc. DC’s Bold Girls Society, high school girls from KIPP DC who each created a patch that Annie hand sewed into a quilt. Each patch answered the question of “I feel BOLD when..”?

The event was also the premiere of a documentary Within Her Seams, a documentary directed by Caleb Hargett that follows Broderick on her journey of engaging her inner power to collaborate with women and girls to create the work for Miss Lou’s first exhibition Soulskins: Fit for Kindred Queens.

It was an amazing night full of incredible bold women and thanks to Annie and the power of her art, we raised nearly $130,000 which will help us continue to create the next generation of women leaders!
