What is Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area?

Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area is a local Girls Inc. affiliate founded in 2006 that provides outstanding programs and opportunities for girls.

In 2020, as we enter a new era of working with girls in the DC region, we are taking time to focus on reinvigorating the board of directors, shaping a strategic direction, and hiring an executive director in an equitable process worthy of the girls living, learning, and growing up in Washington DC.

We are purposefully working with and listening carefully to local stakeholders in order to ensure that Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area can operate at a scale that impacts the highest number of girls possible.

What is Girls Inc.?

Girls Inc. is a nationwide nonprofit organization that believes that girls are powerful and critically important to their communities. Girls Inc. affiliates serve girls ages 5-18 in cities and towns across the United States.

What does Girls Inc. do?

We provide opportunities that equip girls to lead healthy and physically active lives, to achieve academically, and to advocate for themselves and others.

We recognize that poverty, prejudice, and inequality continue to hold some girls back and we work with girls to overcome obstacles caused by those systemic barriers.

How does Girls Inc. do it?

The Girls Inc. Experience is based on three key elements.

– People: Our trained staff and volunteers build trusted mentoring relationships.

        – Environment: We work in girls-only spaces, providing physical and emotional safety, high expectations, and mutual respect.

– Research-based programming: Our life-changing programs focus on the specific needs of local communities.

What are Girls Inc.’s results?

Girls Inc. gets results. A recent research study conducted by the American Institutes for Research showed that:  On 24 dimensions, Girls Inc. girls did significantly better than girls who had not had the Girls Inc. Experience.

The evidence is clear; the Girls Inc. Experience has a real and lasting positive impact on participating girls.

Tell me more about the history of Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area…

A local group of women and men, some of whom had been active in the national organization, including a former Girls Inc. national Board Chair and a former national Policy Coordinator, founded Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. We received our 501(c)(3) designation in 2004 and began serving middle school girls in 2006, with an emphasis on Wards 1, 5, 7 and 8.

In 2010, through a generous in-kind gift from Howard University, we opened a Girls Inc. center that had a computer lab, multi-purpose space, stage, reading area, kitchen, and self-contained classroom. At this site, DC girls accessed mentoring, academic support, college preparation, enrichment activities, and leadership development through July 2019.

In 2020, we are starting a new era for our affiliate. We have temporarily paused our programs in order to take time to work with and listen carefully to local stakeholders. We want Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area to serve the specific needs of girls in the DC area, and to continue to grow strategically over time.
