Internships

Girls Inc. WDCMA offers summer, fall and spring internships. Our interns complete research, communications and outreach tasks and provide office support for our administrative and program offices.

Internships are open to college juniors, seniors and graduate students in fields such as Women’s Studies, sociology, education, social work and non-profit management. The internships are unpaid, but offer a great opportunity to gain significant experience working in a growing non-profit organization with a commitment to girls and service to the community.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

STEM PROGRAM INTERN

Year Round 2011

Position:  Program Intern - STEM
Program:  Girls Inc. After School Program

The College-Bound Girls! Afterschool Program is for middle-school girls ages 11 to 14 (grades 6-8) and promotes girls' academic, social and emotional well-being in an atmosphere of fun, focus and girl-time. Topics and activities cover STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math); as well as tutoring and academic support, health, wellness, and sexuality; economic and financial literacy violence prevention; media literacy; sports; leadership development and advocacy; and "Adventure Girls" field trips and excursions. Girls Inc. has an award-winning all-girl robotics team.


Salary:  

This is an unpaid internship for college credit.

Hours:  

This position will begin immediately and will continue throughout 2011, as mutually agreed to. We require a minimum commitment of eight weeks.

Hours are set at a minimum of 12 hours/week and a maximum of 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. We appreciate flexibility to include occasional evenings and Saturdays to meet the needs of our service to girls and their families, and for field trips and other special events.

Location:  

Girls Inc. Center at Howard University, Building 62-B, 2401 Fourth Street, NW, Washington, DC.

Reports to:  Executive Director

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Key support for program activities including research, activity planning.
  • Working hands-on with middle school girls.
  • Researching appropriate youth activities and communicating with vendors and community partners.
  • Assistance with grant compliance, including data collection, entry and reporting.
  • Support for day-to-day office and program functions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements:
  • Extremely well organized, detail oriented, flexible, and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Punctual, personable, and responsible.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with current Internet and social media systems.
  • Pleasant and effective telephone manner.
  • Willingness to learn and an enthusiasm to work as a team player.
  • Commitment to Girls Inc's mission and goals.
  • Interest in working with girls and families from diverse environments.
  • A good disposition and sense of humor!
  • A strong work ethic, can-do attitude, and ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a criminal background check.
  • Must provide evidence of a negative TB (tuberculosis) test within the last 24 months OR able to obtain one within 15 days of hire, as required by our grant funding.
  • Enrollment in an accredited degree program in a STEM field (science, engineering, math, computer science, etc.), education, youth development, or related field is a plus.
